The Human Rights Council was established on 15 April 2006, with the adoption of Resolution no.60/251 by the General Assembly. It has 47 members who are elected for three year terms by members of the General Assembly, to which it is subsidiary. The HRC has played an important role in addressing humanitarian crises around the world, such as the Israel-Palestinian crisis, as well as country situations in Burma, Guinea, North Korea, Côte d'Ivoire, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Libya, Iran, and Sri Lanka. It also addresses important thematic human rights issues, such as women’s rights, LGBT rights, rights of racial and ethnic minorities, freedom of association, freedom of speech and expression, and freedom of belief and religion.
