Opening Ceremony
“Today you are delegates, Today you represent nations, Today you have the power to change the world.”
The fifth edition of the UMUN 2013 kicked-off with a lot of cheer amongst the delegates, promising to be a stimulating event. Delegates eager to perform and battle it out in their committees seemed to be preparing for a war of words. Akshay Raheja and Tanya Popli, the organizing committee members, introduced the different committees in this edition of the UMUN namely Security Council, Human Rights Council, ADHOC, Group of 20 and All India Political Parties Meet. A motivational address by the Secretary Generals Anchit Kapoor and Vani Sharma followed suit. The Secretary General shed light on the true spirit of democracy through a witty remark about how a diplomat can tell one “to go to hell” with such skill and ability that the person they address might in fact look forward to the journey. Their speech ended with the resounding words - “Never fear, never lose”.
The executive board was introduced to the delegates, soon after Aditi maam declared this session open. She warm-heartedly welcomed the alumni thanking them for their continuous support and help. The MUN spirit to learn , observe, absorb and give back echoed through her speech.
The highlight of the opening ceremony was an alumnus, Kartik Hariharan’s truly inspirational speech. He brought out the true vision of the Model United Nations Conference and made each and every individual realize that they deserved to be exactly where they are regardless of the circumstances that brought them there. He narrated an anecdote on the inception of MUN in DPS Gurgaon which reminded everyone about what MUN really stood for, it served as a waking call for those who seemed to have forgotten its true essence. The goal is to evolve as better individuals by debating passionately and empathizing with the masses of their countries, to realize that they stood as representatives of a thousand souls and aspirations!
